Bao Zhuoxuan was fifteen years old when his human rights lawyer parents Wang Yu and Bao Longjun were arrested by the police. That year, he was beaten by the police, underwent brutal interrogations, attempted to leave China and failed, and had a gun pointed to his head in Myanmar. Here, he tells his story.

In January, Human Rights in China visited Taipei to observe the Taiwanese election and connect with other human rights stakeholders in the region. During our visit, we were honored to meet with Taiwan’s National Human Rights Commission, a governmental body whose duty is to protect and defend human rights in Taiwan by investigating incidents, producing reports, and collaborating with government and civil society.

In light of the recent case of Berklee College of Music student Xiaolei Wu, HRIC stands in solidarity with Chinese human rights defenders who face numerous dangers, threats, and challenges while advocating for human rights and fundamental freedoms, even outside of China.

Qi Zhiyong, activist who survived the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre, recently passed away at 67. In May 2022, he recorded a first-hand account of his experiences at Tiananmen and afterwards, living under repression from the Chinese government. In honor of Qi Zhiyong’s memory, Human Rights in China has translated his full statement into English. 

December 26, 2023 marked the fourth anniversary of “12·26 Xiamen Gathering Case,” in which lawyer Ding Jiaxi was arrested. On this occasion, Human Rights in China released a serialized feature dedicated to Luo Shengchun, a human rights advocate, as a tribute to her unwavering efforts. This feature acknowledges her relentless dedication to seeking justice for Chinese prisoners of conscience, including her husband, Ding Jiaxi, and advocating for human rights and freedom for the Chinese people. The feature was originally published in five parts, each unveiling various facets of Luo Shengchun. A special thank you to Luo Shengchun for generously sharing intimate details of her life, allowing us to see her not only as a courageous and conscientious civic activist but also as a wife, a mother, and a woman with voice and attitude.

Ms. Zhou Shuzhuang of the "Tiananmen Mothers" passed away on September 19, 2023, at the age of 87. The Tiananmen Mothers have issued a eulogy, stating that they will persist according to her last wishes until the June Fourth tragedy is resolved fairly and justice is served. 

This summer, HRIC launched a new intern program, aimed at growing the skills of young activists.
